Delight in his word

…his delight is in the Law of the Lord, and in His Law he meditates day and night…

Psalm 1:2

What a treasure we have in the word of God! If you know me, you know that I believe the word of God, the bible, is absolutely true…I can’t budge on it. I have found the testimony of the Lord to be food for my soul and the highway by which I come to know my King, Jesus.

Every time I come to the scriptures with a seeking heart, I find Jesus. Said better, Jesus opens my eyes to Himself…He finds me! The more time I spend in the word, the more I get to be with Jesus. It is a pretty amazing deal!

Psalm 1

When I read these words from the Psalmist, I can’t help but smile. “His delight is in the Law of the Lord…” I used to think that this was some goal to achieve or something. My thoughts sounded like this…”If I am going to be truly holy and pleasing to the Lord, I need to delight in the bible and bury my face into its pages until I do!” Yeah, that didn’t work out.

Something else happened. I got real with myself and confessed that the main reason why I didn’t actually delight in the scriptures was because I delighted in my own thoughts more. Like what Jesus said to the Jews in John chapter 8, the word of God didn’t have a place in me…but I wanted it to.

So, I did the only thing that seemed right at the time, I just asked Jesus to give me a deep, heart-love for His Word. Guess what…He answered my prayer.

How about you?

Do you delight in His Word? I don’t ask you that to heap up guilt on your head or cause you to go down the dreaded, “yeah, I should probably read my bible more…” path. No, I just want to give you the opportunity to take account of your affections and your heart. If you are like I was, seeking but coming up short, don’t make your heart heavy with false guilt. Instead, ask Jesus to fill your heart with delight for His word…I promise, this is a prayer He will always answer!
